Heyyy, I'm Jae!

In my work I focus on narrative and storytelling, whether that be through comics, illustrations, or portraiture, and I most often work with watercolour, gouache, and acrylic. My art has a strong emphasis on the character/figure’s relationships and emotions utilising text, imagery, and symbolism.  Even when approaching figure painting and portraiture I want to communicate more about the figure(s) than simply what they look like, instead allowing the viewer to understand their story and who they are. My portraiture paintings take on a visually collaged, often cinematic, style through the layering and combination of different imagery and text, displaying various emotions and moments in time simultaneously. I have continued this desire for storytelling through comics, a recent path I have begun to go down. Comics have allowed for me to expand upon my use of text and imagery in a more long form format, giving me the ability to develop my own narratives.
