Heyyy, I'm Jae!

In my artistic practice I emphasise storytelling, whether that be through comics, illustration, or portraiture. I most often work with watercolour, gouache and acrylic to create intimate character studies by layering text, imagery, and symbolism. Even when approaching figure painting and portraiture, I want to express more than how the figure looks externally, instead allowing the viewer to understand their story and who they are. I take a lot of inspiration from film and the different ways in which the medium can be used to tell a story, even without words. The media—film, television, books, music—that I engage with deeply impacts my work, whether that be narratively, thematically, or aesthetically. Though a majority of my work is done with vibrant and saturated colours, creating very nostalgic-looking worlds, I also have a deep love for horror and the stories that can be told through the medium of the genre.
